How to Position Yourself as a Trendsetter + Industry Expert

Even the most established of professionals within the luxury/lifestyle industry can sometimes struggle with positioning themselves as experts. Becoming a thought leader doesn’t happen overnight – it takes a lot of time and effort to showcase how valuable your insight can be.

I, for one, am no stranger to what it takes to become an established source. While the process can be intimidating, I want to share some key steps to paving the way to being seen as a trendsetter among your industry peers.

Do your research

First and foremost, it’s important that you consider your goals. Are you looking to elevate your brand to something more high-end? Are you looking to get ahead of the curve with new trends? Do you want to be seen as a go-to expert in your field and make a name for yourself? If any of these appeal to you (regardless of how long you’ve been in business), then there are a few tasks under your belt to help you get there.

If you’re vying to be the expert source for upcoming trends, it’s time to do your research and to do so well in advance. For instance, you’ll want to acquaint yourself with what’s hot right now – be it the Pantone Color of the Year, runway fashion, on-trend interior design, and so on. The same can be said for elevating your brand or showing potential clients that you’re a worthy investment. People want to see that you’re knowledgeable, so start making moves to continue your education with industry workshops or conferences.

Make sure you’re following through

Beyond broadening your knowledge and taking the steps necessary to move upward, you need to be able to showcase this to your target audience, peers, and clientele. Having the insight is one thing, but it’s another to be known for that expertise.

Social media and blog posts are a wonderful place to start. Film some promotional Reels, write some educational articles for your website, and promote yourself in timely ways. If you have some valuable solutions for COVID-related wedding snafus, consider trying to connect with relevant industry podcasts. I personally love sharing tutorials for DIY home décor as well. I also love sharing innovative event design and showing the world what I was able to bring to life. It’s all about shouting your own accomplishments from the rooftop!

Prepare your team

Let’s be honest – none of this would be possible without your team on your side. If you’re continuing your education and sharpening your expertise, it’s crucial that you help them to do the same. After all, they are representing your brand and you, so it should be a no-brainer that they are well-versed and on the same page.

One of the best ways you can help them to succeed alongside you is to incorporate team retreats into your calendar. If there’s a seminar that you could all benefit from, then make it into a collective training session. If you want them to be up-to-speed on the newest trends, set aside some time weekly for them to do their own research and report their findings. Having everyone refine their skills is key to a well-rounded team.

Admittedly, this can be a slow-burn process. But having clients and fellow industry pros come to you for trusted insight is invaluable, and you’ll be a much better entrepreneur because of it!
