3 Tips for Designing a Party with Gold, Silver & Metallic Decor!
Looking to design a party with BIG visual excitement? Take a look at this metallic themed 50th birthday party I recently designed for my amazing client Armen. Gorgeous gold, silver, grey and gunmetal filled the space and set the tone for a one-in-a-lifetime celebration. I love working with metallics and I’ve learned over the years just how to utilize them to make the biggest impact. Read on to learn my top three tips for designing with a metallic color palette!
1. Mix Metals Purposefully
One of the things that makes this room design so dynamic is the mixture of metallics - gold, silver & gunmetal. At first glance you can see all of the shades together, but take a closer look and notice where each of the metallics are used. I was very purposeful with where I mixed them together, and where I emphasized one at a time.
Because the room itself was decorated in a silver and white palette, I kept the the tables and accompanying dining chairs silver and grey. That really grounded the room and allowed the gold accents to pop. As your eye rises up from the floor, you start to see gold in the place settings and tabletop accessories. They were all comprised of delicate white porcelain or clear glass, and accented only in gold. Higher above the table tops are the big, exciting arrangements where I mixed all of the metallics together to create drama for the eye.
Carefully choosing where to use each metallic shade allowed for an amazing, over-the-top look that still felt harmonious.
2. Utilize Pattern & Texture
When using a limited color palette or with a true monochromatic design, finding other ways to add interest is key, and texture is a perfect way to do it. Whether it’s the visual texture of the florals in your arrangement, or the actual physical feeling of the chairs, linens or walking surface, it all impacts the guests’ experience. Make sure you’re choosing materials with varied textures to add depth and interest to your designs.
3. Include Reflective Surfaces
To up the impact of metallic themed decor, use reflective and mirrored surfaces! Aside from their metallic grey color, mirrors will bounce light around the room, reflect the other gold and silver tones, and amplify the entire effect. Here I used mirrored dining tables, tall mirrored panels behind the cake display area, and a custom patterned mirrored dance floor to create serious wow factor.
