We are in love with Holly Somerville‘s work! Holly’s main method is botanical watercolour on hot-pressed Fabriano paper, but she also works in soft pastel and pen and ink. Her beautiful artwork has been shown in solo exhibitions in Ireland, in the Bay Tree Gallery, Holywood, The Kennedy Gallery, Dublin, and The Garden House, Enniskerry. Her work hangs in distinguished collections such as The National Trust, and Trinity College, Dublin. She is a Fellow of the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ballycastle, County Mayo, and has shown work in many group exhibitions, including the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Royal Ulster Academy, the Ulster Museum, and the Kennedy Gallery.

For several years, Holly was based in the herbarium of the Botany Department of Trinity College, Dublin, and was commissioned to draw new illustrations for the 7th edition of David Webb’s ‘An Irish Flora’ (Dundalgan Press). She has done extensive botanically correct pen and ink drawings for researchers at Trinity College (Dublin), Mainz University, Aberdeen University, Perth University (Australia), Leiden University, and Edinburgh Botanic Gardens. These drawings have been published as illustrations in papers for various scientific journals such as Blumea.

Ragweeds are flowering plants in the genus Ambrosia in the sunflower family Asteraceae. Common names include bitterweeds and bloodweeds.

The name Ambrosia is sometimes claimed to be derived from the Ancient Greek term ἀμβροσία referring to the food of the gods of Mount Olympus that confered immortality. This is somewhat ironic since the genus is best known for the severe and widespread allergies caused by its pollen. The term might refer to the tenacity of the plants, which makes it hard to rid an area of them if they occur as invasive weeds.

Ragweeds occur in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere and South America. Ragweeds prefer dry, sunny grassy plains, sandy soils, river banks, roadsides, and ruderal sites (disturbed soils) such as vacant lots and abandoned fields.

There are 41 species worldwide. Many are adapted to the arid climates of the desert. Burrobush (A. dumosa) is one of the most arid-adapted perennials in North America. About 10 species occur in the Sonoran Desert.

This genus is not to be confused with Kochia scoparia, which also has the common name “ragweed”.

The language of flowers, sometimes called floriography, was a Victorian-era means of communication in which various flowers and floral arrangements were used to send coded messages, allowing individuals to express feelings which otherwise could not be spoken. This language was most commonly communicated through Tussie-Mussies, an art which has a following today.

Today we’re interested in Secret Loves

Acacia means Secret love

Acacia ( /əˈkeɪʃə/ or /əˈkeɪsiə/) is a genus of shrubs and trees belonging to the subfamily Mimosoideae of the family Fabaceae, first described in Africa by theSwedish botanist Carl Linnaeus in 1773. Many non-Australian species tend to be thorny, whereas the majority of Australian acacias are not. They are pod-bearing, with sap and leaves typically bearing large amounts of tannins and condensed tannins that historically in many species found use as pharmaceuticals and preservatives.

The Acacia is used as a symbol in Freemasonry, to represent purity and endurance of the soul, and as funerary symbolism signifying resurrection and immortality. The tree gains its importance from the description of the burial of Hiram Abiff, the builder of King Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem

Perhaps the most famous acacia is the Arbre du Ténéré in Niger. The reason for the tree’s fame is that it used to be the most isolated tree in the world, approximately400 km (249 mi) from any other tree. The tree was knocked down by a truck driver in 1973.
